a
*
Affinity * How readily a garment or fabric reacts with dye.
*
Agitation * The process of moving the fabric around in order to improve it's exposure to the dye.
*
*
*
b
*
Batik * When wax is used to reserve or mask areas of fabric. Will obviously not work with hot water dyes.
*
*
*
d
*
Direct dyes * A dye type associated with hot water applications - i.e. boiling point or 90 degrees plus.
*
Dosage * The ratio of dye to fabric. Adjustments to the dosage determines the intensity of the shade.
*
Dye Bath * The ready to use dye mixture to which the garment is added. Dye Solution + Water = Dye Bath.
*
Dye Solution * The solution formed when dye is dissolved in hot water to create a concentrate that should be strained before use.
*
*
*
f
*
Fixation * The process of establishing a dye result that lasts.
*
Fixative * Substance or process used to promote dyeing permanence.
*
*
*
l
*
Levelness * Refers to the variation in shade; the more level, the less variation.
*
Light-fastness * Measures how resistant colour is to fading when exposed to light.
*
Liquor ratio * Describes the quantity of liquid (water) relative to fabric in the dye bath or washing machine as distinct from the amount of dye.
*
*
*
r
*
Reactive dyes * A dye type associated with cool to warm water applications. Water should not exceed 60 degreesC.
*
Resist dyeing * Any method by which part of the garment or fabric is kept from absorbing dye -eg tie dyeing, batik, shibori.
*
*
*
s
*
Sachet * Small paper or plastic bag in which Lady Dye dyes and fixatives are packaged.
*
Sizing * Any method by which part of the garment or fabric is kept from absorbing dye -eg tie dyeing, batik, shibori.
*
*
*
t
*
Tie dyeing * A method of selectively applying dye, using string or rubber bands to mask selected areas.
*
*
*
w
*
Wash load * Quantifies the capacity of a washing machine and determines how much fabric can be dyed.
*
Wash-fastness * Measure of the extent to which colours will not wash out or run when wet.
